On Saturday night, UFC flyweight champion Divance Figueroa successfully defended his title with a first-round performance from Alex Perez. It was the champion’s strong performance, but one that didn’t really happen in the first place. Originally, Figueroa was ready to face former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrand, however, Garbrand was forced out in October due to a biceps injury.
But, it’s not all bad luck that “no love” didn’t happen. When Garbrand was forced to withdraw from his title shootout, he revealed that he had contracted COVID-19 before his injury and that it had adversely affected his training. Still, several months after coming down with the virus, Garbrand says he is still suffering from its effects.
On Twitter, Gebrand reacted to Figueroa’s victory, saying he was recovering from Covid-19, but wanted to face the champion.
It was a lamb that had been slaughtered to make golem fer and let me recover from covid. It’s just a business.

And then in an Instagram story (quote courtesy of MMMania), Garbrand revealed how much Covid-19 is affecting him.
“Disclaimer from my last post, I was positive for COVID 29 .Guest. Since then I have been battling vertigo, tearing my vein in my biceps which has caused me to have blood clots, pneumonia and mental fog, these are the symptoms I was and deal with and this is the reason I pulled out . Fighting. I have not done any media, but I want to address it on my own terms. “
When Garbrand withdrew from the fight, aiming to return to the rear cage in December, believing his biceps injury was co-opted, but gave his statements about recovery which did not seem probable. In fact, speaking with Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Garbrand targets its return in March 2021.
“Alex Perez was the guy who gave us Figueroa to make our fight more intense.” “I beat that guy (Figueroa) in the first or second round. I will be ready by March. ”
Luckily for Garbrand, that timeline will work well for the UFC, who have booked Figueroa for a second title defense in just 21 days. Figueroa will take on fellow UFC 255 winner Brandon Moreno as the main event of UFC 256 next month.
