More wholesale chains recall onions that may have been infected with salmonella

Retailers Joe and Ralph’s stores on the West Coast recall onions that may contain salmonella in the middle of a outbreak of the bacterium that is now more than 600 people sick in 43 states.

Progressive Produce recalls red and yellow onions sold on the West Coast, specifically red onions sold at Trader Joe’s stores in Arizona, California and Utah, and yellow onions sold at Ralph’s stores in California, according to a reminder call posted Monday by the US Food and Drug Administration. The red onions were sold under the Pacific Gold Brand, while others were sold separately in bulk bins.

Consumers have also been warned in recent days to eat prepared foods that could contain onions contaminated with the bacteria sold nationally by retailers including Giant Eagle, Walmart and Kroger.

The move comes days after Giant Eagle recalled nearly 50 of a variety of ready-made products sold to consumers since July 25 – including dozens of varieties of salads, pizzas and hoagies – that include onion as an ingredient, according to the company, which it serves more than 410 stores in Indiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. (See the full list of recalled products below.)

The products may contain memories of onions linked to a salmonella outbreak that has caused 640 diseases, including 85 hospitalizations, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People infected with salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within hours, or sometimes days, after being exposed to the bacteria. Children and adults 65 and older are more likely to become seriously ill, the CDC said.

Memory of Giant Eagle also includes all bulk and bagged red, yellow and white onions that have been sold in its production departments since June 6, according to a report released by the FDA.

The reminder follows a public health warning from the Department of Agriculture’s Department of Meat and Poultry Products’ Food Safety and Inspection on July 30 and 31 made by Taylor Farms, based in Salinas, California, and sold in Walmart and Kroger stores.

The warnings stem from a reminder earlier this month by Thomson International of all the red, yellow, white and sweet yellow onions shipped nationwide with effect from May 1 to the present day.
