The review site has been keeping tabs since March. Businesses can update their status temporarily or permanently shut down on Yelp.
As of August 31st, about 163,700 businesses on Yelp have closed since March 1, the company said, an increase of 23% since July 10, with 98,000 people saying they have closed good doors.
Of all closed industries, about 32,100 are restaurants, and close to 19,600, or about 61%, have closed permanently.
According to Yelp, some meals performed better than others: pizzerias, delis, food trucks, bakeries and coffee shops did better than food at Mexican restaurants, snacks and brunch spots, burger or sandwich shops or desserts.
Restaurant groups have warned that many eateries will not be able to escape the blows inflicted by the epidemic.
This week, the National Restaurant Association said 100,000 restaurants have closed permanently or long-term, adding that the sector is on track to lose 240 billion dollars in sales this year.
Many factors have made it particularly difficult for restaurants, which, even at the best of times, work on razor-thin margins, making it through disruption.
Retail operators are also struggling. About 30,400 shopping and retail establishments on Yelp have closed permanently since March 1, about 17,500 or 58% of them. The cities have been hit hard, according to the data. Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Miami all shut down operations permanently, especially in large numbers.
