More than 80% of hospitalized coronavirus patients experience neurological symptoms

While respiratory problems are a well-documented symptom of coronavirus, researchers have found that more than 80% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients also experience some type of neurological manifestation. In a study of 909 patients admitted to the Chicago Hospital Network, the researchers found that 919 of them had a neurological issue at some point during their covid-1 infection.

“The most frequent neurologic manifestations were myalgias, headaches, encephalopathy, dizziness, dysentery. [impaired sense of taste] And inconsistencies [loss of smell], ”The authors wrote in their study, which was published Monday in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. “Strokes, movement disorders, motor and sensory deficits, ataxia and seizures were uncommon.”

The patients involved in this study were admitted to the Northwestern Medicine Healthcare System between March 5 and April 6, and all were diagnosed with Covid-19. The team noted neurologic symptoms based on a review of clinical notes, diagnostic studies, and physician-documented diagnoses taken during the hospitalization of patients. Patients ranged in age from 16.9 years to 58.5 years, and 134 mechanical ventilations were required during their stay.

The researchers noted that patients with neurologic symptoms experienced longer periods than non-hospital patients, but the discharge did not differ significantly with functional outcomes and mortality in and out of people. They also found that those who experienced neurological problems were found to be younger than those who did not.

“The fact that overall any neurologic manifestations are more likely to occur in younger people is surprising, and may be explained by a greater clinical emphasis on the risk of respiratory failure than other symptoms in elderly patients,” the study authors noted. “Alternatively, early neurological manifestations such as myalgia, headache or dizziness may require prior medical care. In contrast, encephalopathy was more common in older patients. ”

The authors also acknowledged that there are some limitations to this study, in which less than 6% of patients were evaluated by a neurologist, they were cared for under strict infection control, and the data are precursor. However, they say the data provide a more general view of neurologic symptoms that should be further explored.

“The epidemic lasts barely 9 months, and the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the nervous system remain uncertain,” the authors wrote. “Our results suggest that, of all neurologic manifestations, from encephalopathy, Covid-19 is associated with poor functional outcome in hospitalized patients, and may have a lasting effect.”
