At least 123 visitors to Nevada have tested positive for the coronavirus in the weeks following their trip and return home, USA Today reports. This occurs after casinos in the state reopened June 4, with state governor Steve Sisolak (D) aiming to rejuvenate the economy by welcoming tourists to Las Vegas.
In light of the increasing case count, with nearly 1,000 new cases added on Monday, bringing the state’s total to 43,831 total infections, Sisolak reimposed bar closures last week at county hot spots and added capacity restrictions for other restaurants and public spaces. Regarding casinos, however, the governor said he would wait for information before closing them or restricting admission.

Tourists, particularly those who visit casinos, are a pillar in the Nevada economy. Tourism and entertainment are the main drivers of job openings in the state, with casino hotels accounting for the most jobs in the state’s lucrative entertainment sector, with 172,927 jobs in 2019.
USA Today also reports that within the first week of the casinos reopening in June, 16 visitors had been diagnosed with the virus. In demographic terms, Californians have made up about 46 percent of visitors from other states who tested positive for the coronavirus since early June. California has also struggled to control the rampant spread of COVID-19 infections, especially in the southern part of the state.
Reports of public health malpractice in reopened casinos have also been celebrated; In early July, a Nevada man was arrested for trespassing on casino grounds without authorization and refusing to wear a mask.
Unsafe working conditions have also led restaurant workers unions to to sue Las Vegas casino operators cannot protect employees from exposure to the coronavirus. A June lawsuit, for example, accuses several resorts and properties of running for nearly three weeks before demanding facial masks, particularly for guests, a measure the lawsuit says still puts employees at risk of infection even if they wore a mask themselves. Some of the accused were iconic casinos like the MGM Grands resort and the Bellagio casino.
Sisolak made facial masks a requirement for venturing into public spaces in June 24. This applies to residents and visitors.
