Montana state health officials reported 137 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and added two more deaths, according to the Montana Response COVID-19 monitoring map.
Yellowstone County added most new cases with 23, followed closely by Missoula County with 21 and Lake County with 19. The remaining new cases were reported in 20 other Montana counties. (See the table below).
One of the new cases is reported in Sweet Grass County, which until this week had not reported cases of the virus. The county now has two active cases.
Blaine County, which previously reported only one case of COVID-19, added three new cases.
On Thursday, Lewis and Clark health officials reported their first COVID-19 related death. The second new death reported Friday is related to Canyon Creek Memory Care, a Billings senior care facility struggling with a deadly outbreak of the virus. RiverStone Health released this press release on Friday morning:
With much sadness and regret, RiverStone Health, the Yellowstone County Public Health Department, reports an additional COVID-19-related death from the outbreak at Canyon Creek Memory Care.
On Thursday, July 16, a woman in her 90s passed away at Canyon Creek Memory Care.
To protect the privacy of the woman and her family, RiverStone Health will not disclose more information about the death.
This latest death in Yellowstone County is reflected in today’s COVID-19 monitoring map of the state. Since Monday, July 6, a total of 10 Canyon Creek residents have died.
“We know this woman’s family and friends will hold on and cherish the memories of the happiest days,” said John Felton, Yellowstone County Health Officer and President and CEO of RiverStone Health. “We pray that another Montana family will not have to bear the loss and bury a loved one due to COVID-19.”
To date, 652 Yellowstone County residents have been infected with COVID-19 and 15 have died.

(Note: Local health departments often learn about the results of private laboratories and update their numbers earlier than the state of Montana. In addition, there may also be differences in reporting criteria, so local numbers may differ from those appearing on the Montana COVID- 19 monitoring map (MTN News includes data reported by individual Montana counties, which may include cases not counted by the state and different methods of determining recoveries).
