Moment is expanding its bagline to include backpacks, bags and organizers

Moment announces an expansion of its softgoods line with the new Moment Travelwear bags. The new bags, which include a backpack, a bag, gadget organizers and other accessories, are available through a Kickstarter campaign starting today. Moment expects November this year to begin shipping the bags.

Although Moment is primarily known for its mobile photographic lenses, the company says that these bags are not designed to be camera bags, but are for everyday use. The backpack, which is available in two sizes (17 liters and 21 liters), looks like an old-school JanSport backpack, while the luggage bag looks like any other minimalist bag you have seen before.

Inside, the bags have a variety of organizational features, including laptop and tablet sleeves, concealed pockets, key rings, and water bottle pockets. The backpack has a passageway slot for a telescopic suitcase handle, while the bag has a padded base to protect your items when you put it down. Both designs have “storm-resistant” 600D recycle Kodra on the outside, 210D nylon oxlan on the inside, and weather-resistant zippers. They are available in black, olive, or clay (a burnt-orange color). The backpack costs $ 179 ($ 149 via Kickstarter) for both sizes, while the tote costs $ 119 ($ 99 via Kickstarter).

In addition to the main bags, Moment has also developed two different gadget organizers that can be stowed in them. The $ 69.99 ($ 49 on Kickstarter) Tech Organizer is a clamshell pouch with a variety of straps and pockets to hold items such as a mouse, laptop charger, cables, batteries and other accessories. Inside the organizer is a slimmer and smaller bag that you can use for lighter carrying days.

The $ 59.99 ($ 39 Kickstarter) Battery Organizer is designed for photographers and videographers, and it provides specific memory card and camera battery pockets. A smart layered pocket system lets you easily separate fresh batteries from used ones, which should help keep things straight when you’re on a shoot.

The camera insert fits in the backpack and allows quick access to camera gear.

Finally, although Moment marketing these bags as everyday commuter or carrying bags, it does offer an optional refurbished camera insert that converts them into camera bags. The $ 99 ($ 79 pre-order) MTW camera insert can be used as a standalone case or fit in any back large enough to hold it, but it is specifically designed to go with the new MTW -rucksack a -tas. It’s big enough to hold a mirrorless camera like DSLR camera and two lenses, and the included boat dividers have smart little pouches to store small items like filters.

Two hooks on the side of the insert line with loops in the MTW backpack to hold it in place in the main compartment, while the main zipper of the backpack gives you access to your camera gear from the side. The insert was designed to be compact, allowing you to place other things next to your back. This is not something meant for taking a whole studio camera gear.

With this new line of bags, Moment will take the obvious comparison with Peak Design, a company that started by making belts and other photography accessories before launching a wildly successful line of backpacks, bags and organizers. Moment’s bags are unique from Peak Design’s in that they are not specifically aimed at photographers (outside of the Camera Insert and Battery Organizer) and are more aimed at the general creative audience.

They also have a different design than the Peak Design line, with softer materials and a less technical appearance. These bags are also not intended for walking adventures or multiday trips. They are designed to be what you wear on a daily basis with your work equipment.

I was able to demo the 21-liter backpack, camera insert, and organizer accessories, and I found them to be more comfortable on my 5-foot, 11-inch frame than the comparable capacity 20-liter Peak Design Everyday Backpack. The back panel has a rigid frame to support your laptop (my 15-inch laptop fits without issue, and any large MacBook will fit instantly), and the straps are wide with a breathable mesh material. There are also a lot of clever hidden features to help you organize things everywhere, but from the outside, the bag usually looks like a typical school bag.

Moment is entering a perfect market, at least according to my Instagram feed, which is full of ads for bags that cater to young creatives on the go between home and next coffee shop. It also launches a line of bags at a time when most of us do not travel very much and many do not even work in an office or coffee shop to work more.

However, the sleek design and slim features of the Travelwear bags make them a compelling option if you are looking for a new backpack or bag and do not want to sport the same Peak Design bag that all other techies have.
