Los Angeles County set a record on Friday for the third most new coronavirus case and hospitalization in a single week.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Friday’s numbers would have been incredible just a few weeks ago, and the city had never faced life in what it called the biggest threat to life.
“With the numbers we’re seeing this week, we’re on the edge of 10,000 cases a day,” Garcetti said. “Controlling this virus is a crucial mission for Los Angeles.”
The county reported 8,860 new cases and 2,668 hospital admissions on Friday, according to a press release from the local public health department.
Los Angeles is expected to reach half a million coronavirus cases by the end of this year, according to Garcetti.
Public health officials are urging residents not to travel to you this holiday season, and to stay home if possible.
“Los Angeles County continues to experience epidemics that are moving in a direction that causes significantly more suffering and death,” said Dr. John H. Once 85% of ICU beds in the Southern California area are filled, Los Angeles County will impose additional closures on some businesses such as personal care, such as nail and hair salons, and family recreation centers such as zoos and museums.
