The advent of the Moderna vaccine means that healthcare officials at Memorial Herman can transfer Texas vaccine allocation guidelines to Phase 1B, allowing them to treat more people who were not a priority during Phase 1A. The hospital is about to make the transition to that stage.

Phase 1 focuses primarily on healthcare workers and front lines. Now, other populations such as first responders, community pharmacists and school nurses will be able to schedule their appointments.
For Phase 1b, The priority will extend to anyone over the age of 65 and anyone over the age of 16 who suffers from at least one chronic medical condition.

According to Texas Death Certificate data, more than 70% of Covid-19-related deaths occurred in people 65 years of age or older.
Memorial Harman said the new phase would allow the vaccine to be distributed to a wide range of people, so he expects it to start protecting a number of critical populations that are at increased risk of catching the virus due to their occupation.
