MLB, MLBPA reach double-headed deal by 2020

7:01 pm: A deal was reached, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The double tickets of seven tickets will take effect on August 1.

6:12 pm: Major League Baseball and the union are moving toward a 2020 doubleheads deal, report Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark of The Athletic. If the two sides come to an agreement, the doubleheads would consist of a pair of seven-inning games, but it would only be for this year, according to Rosenthal and Stark.

The idea behind this would be for teams to preserve their pitchers, according to Rosenthal and Stark, and it could give each team a better chance to finish their 60-game schedule during a season shortened by a pandemic.

Teams like the Marlins, Phillies, Yankees and Blue Jays have already had their schedules altered just a week after the season due to concerns about the coronavirus. Neither Miami nor Philly have played all this week, and neither will return to the field until Tuesday at the earliest. As a result, they will have a lot of ground to recover in the coming weeks. Double games of seven innings could make catching up easier.
