Minneapolis faces nearly 80 nights of arrests, mostly for exit violations, following riots

At least 79 people were arrested Thursday night as police, state troops and Minnesota National Guard soldiers patrolled Minneapolis.

The Minnesota State Patrol said state troopers and Department of Natural Resources officials made 49 arrests, mostly for exiting exit, although one was for consumption under 21. The State Patrol said several knives were seized but no injuries were reported.

As of 9:30 a.m., the Minneapolis Police Department reports that they have made 30 arrests.

The heightened response from legal action comes after unrest on Wednesday following the death of a man in the city center.

Police say the man, who was suspected in a deadly shooting earlier in the afternoon, turned the gun on himself when officials locked him up at Nicollet Mall.

Rumors circulating online said police had shot the man, however. Those rumors led to a crowd gathering near the scene and eventually looting, windows were smashed in the area, and several fires were set in the city.

In response, state and city leaders set up the police presence for the night, while an exit statement was declared in Minneapolis and St. Louis. Paul for the night. With Mayor Frey and Governor Walz sending a clear message Thursday: If you hit the streets past 8 p.m., you will be arrested.
