Minecraft combat snapshot v6 is ready for testing. Developer Mojang has been conducting a public test of a substantial amount of control for some time now, although it has been half a year since the last update to that test. But now v6 is finally here, and with it, a whole new set of experimental changes to Minecraft’s basic combat systems.
These combat snapshots are separate from the usual pre-release rollout patches. Instead, download the Reddit test, add it to your Minecraft installation (Java edition only), and test things this way. The v6 release contains even more radical changes, so as Jens Bergensten of Mojang points out, “we are not ready to go through to phase two of the tests yet” – that will be the point where the systems will all be decided and further updates are just about number balancing.
The v6 incorporates the ‘coyote time’ mechanics introduced in v5, which allows you to hit anything when you’re aiming for it, but technically attacks outside the boundary box – basically a form of auto-target. The system was meant to help you get rid of small, fast mobs like rabbits or cubs more easily, so instead those mobs now have bigger goals.
The other major changes include food and hunger. Foods can now be interrupted when you eat, natural healing is now faster, and it turns food slower.
Re-target goal again:
- “Coyote Time” removed
- Entities with boundary boxes smaller than 0.9 of a block are inflated (for target purposes) to be 0.9 of a block (rabbits, bats, etc.)
- Swords have always had sweeping attacks, axes have it with the sweeping meaning
- Forget now only places a 4 tick delay until the next attack, regardless of weapon.
- Increased base range to 3 (was 2.5) and extended bonus range for delayed attacks
Shield changes:
- Shields now only protect up to 5 damage from melee attacks (still 100% against projectiles)
- Shields recovers quickly after an attack
Changes to axles:
- Rename Chopping to Cleaving
- Other meaning of weapons removed from the meaning table. The axes had just too many possible meanings. It also feels a bit fitting with a rare Cleaving spell than a common Sharpness spell for axes
Changes to arcs / projectiles:
- Player momentum is added to thrown projectiles, but only in the direction you are aiming
- The accuracy of the bow and arrow now gradually decreases the longer you pull the bow
Changes in food and hunger:
- Reset meal time to 32 characters
- Food is now interrupted when something hits you
- Natural healing is even faster (2 seconds, was 3 seconds)
- Natural healing turns food 50% slower
- By popular request – re-introduced the rule that sprinting requires more than 6 points of food
Other changes:
- The attack indicator has been completely removed because it is no longer used by any systems
- Fixed calculation of knockback
- Fixed value for damage to items not at the customer’s
- Fixed bug that caused players to not be able to attack / interact after respawning
- Nerfed Sweeping Edge score up to 25/33 / 37.5 percent (was 50/66/75%)
