Cowboys defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was lost for the season with a torn quadriceps tendon on the first day of padded practice on Monday. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy felt terrible seeing it happen.
‘Very, very sorry. It makes you sick on a personal level, if you now see a player going through this type of injury, ”said McCarthy, through Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “I can not tell you what he meant for our D-line in the short time we have been together.”
McCarthy said he is confident the Cowboys can bounce back from losing a player they relied on.
“Total depth of the defensive line is what makes us feel like we’re in good shape there,” McCarthy said. “The younger players will always have to step up. . . . [McCoy’s injury] makes the awareness and urgency of younger players absolutely increased. ”
The 32-year-old McCoy, a six-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year, $ 18.3 million contract with the Cowboys this year. It is possible that the Cowboys will decide next year to continue with him in order not to pay a basic salary of $ 5 million to a senior veteran who is suffering from a serious injury. It’s possible McCoy’s time with the Cowboys is over before it starts.
