Microsoft is launching its own Windows file recovery tool, designed to recover files that you accidentally deleted. Windows File Recovery is a command line application that will recover a variety of files and documents from local hard drives, USB drives and even camera SD cards. However, file recovery on cloud storage or network shared files is not supported.
Like any file recovery tool, you should use it as soon as possible on deleted files to make sure they have not been overwritten. You will be able to use the new Microsoft tool to recover MP3 files, MP4 videos, PDF documents, JPEG images and typical Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.
Microsoft’s file recovery tool has a default mode designed primarily for NTFS file systems. It will recover files from a damaged disk or after formatting a disk. A second signature mode will probably be the most popular option, allowing users to retrieve specific file types on FAT, exFAT, and ReFS file systems. This signing mode may also take longer to retrieve files.
Windows File Recovery will be a useful tool for anyone who has accidentally deleted an important document or accidentally deleted a disk drive. Microsoft already provides a Previous Versions feature in Windows 10 that allows you to retrieve documents that you may have deleted, but you must specifically enable it using a File History feature that is disabled by default.
