Following the announcement in October, Microsoft yesterday released the Surface Duo in full detail. In addition to specs, it opened pre-orders for the Android Foldable. The company today shared a 35-minute demo video that it gave to members of the press as part of its pitch for the Surface Duo.
Chief Product Officer Panos Panay offers Microsoft its vision for “better” mobile productivity. The cited audience includes “Surface fans”, people who “love” Office / Teams / Outlook, and Android users.
I’m not trying to figure out the phone, but I believe this is a better way to get things done, a better way to connect, and a better way to connect on a mobile device.
While a controlled demo, the video offers a good look at the Surface Duo in action. There is a good overview of the screen modes and the first party apps that support it. One particular highlight is the Amazon Kindle app and viewing pages on both sides. It’s like reading a paper book, and Microsoft mentions that one app on two screens is “suspenseful”.
On the productivity front, Panay says:
… when you see things side by side, when you work on two connected sides, the brain switches on in a very different way. It lights up, it magnifies. You can achieve more, you can see more, collect more.
At the end there is a short section where the design team talks about the hardware. There are “ultra-thin wires between the two monitors that carry data, power and control signals.” We also see the internal layout of the two batteries and other key components.
In general, there is nothing new in this demo video since October, and the user interface / experience looks stable, although that is to be expected, as the Surface Duo will ship in less than a month.
