Silent notification requests on Edge

One of the best features of Edge is the ability to manage site notifications. This is based on the fact that there are two types of notifications: annoying that no one requested and then useful, such as meeting alerts from a calendar web application. With this in mind, Microsoft is introducing support for something called “silent notification requests” starting with Edge 84.

It is currently enabled by default for all Edge users, but can be disabled if you prefer at edge: // settings / content / notifications.

Microsoft Edge uses the same “Quieter notification permission UI“Like Google Chrome. In addition to handling annoying pop-up notifications on legitimate sites, this helps block them on fraudulent sites.—Which may force you to allow notifications before sending you spam or even malware.

in a Blog In announcing the feature, Microsoft said it had chosen to enable the default setting for users on Microsoft Edge 84 “due to high volumes of user feedback on unwanted notification subscriptions.”

The goal is to make notifications less annoying so you can focus on what you’re doing. When silent notification requests are enabled, site notification requests made through Notifications or Push APIs will appear as a bell labeled “Notifications Blocked” in the address bar, as opposed to the typical full scroll notice Microsoft said.

Edge roadmap and other features

Microsoft’s Edge, of course, is aimed at businesses as well, and it’s helpful for those who use the browser in this environment to know when new versions are occurring. For this reason, Microsoft will now offer companies more visibility into its feature roadmap and release schedule.

You can check out the new business features of Microsoft Edge at Microsoft 365 roadmap portaland a new Microsoft Edge launch program for beta and stable channel launches, Microsoft announced in another Blog this week.

And last but not least, it’s a small change that could make a big difference. Microsoft is presenting improvements for multitasking in the latest Insider versions of Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge: Your tabs now appear in Alt + Tab, so you can quickly switch between apps and sites. You can also easily access the tabs of your most important sites directly in the taskbar.

More Edge moves to beat Chrome

From edge 83, Edge browser also includes automatic profile switching to help you manage work and home profiles when you work from home, and security features that help prevent you from accidentally visiting unsafe websites.

Other Recent improvements to the Edge feature include new privacy controls, performance improvements to the Collections feature, a new note capability, and a Read Out Loud feature for PDF files.

Chrome has introduced new features to help address user concerns about security and privacy.. But some Google Chrome users are still looking for a functional but secure and private alternative.

Edge still has work to do on the privacy front: a couple of months ago, the browser appeared under fire for privacy violationsand its movement bring the browser to Windows have annoying some people. But Microsoft has been willing to share a new report from NSS laboratories that saw Edge beat Chrome on security bets.

New Edge features are coming all the time, and I certainly enjoy using the browser for some of my daily tasks. There are other safe browsers, Apple’s Safari, Brave, and Firefox, but Edge is great, too.
