Microsoft improves OneDrive for consumers and businesses

Microsoft today announced a comprehensive set of enhancements to its OneDrive cloud storage service for consumers and businesses.

“We are pleased to announce new OneDrive features in Microsoft 365 that provide a more connected and flexible file experience for business users, more control for administrators, and a more personal touch for everyone at home,” announced Seth Patton of Microsoft.

This is the new.

Add to OneDrive. This feature will be released in a public preview for commercial users later this month. Add to OneDrive which makes it easy to add shared folders directly to your OneDrive, Microsoft says, including content that others shared with you through OneDrive or content that is part of your shared library in Microsoft Teams or SharePoint.

Teams that share integration. Microsoft will “soon” begin rolling out OneDrive share integration in Teams along with similar integration for Outlook and Office. “When you go to share a file from Teams, you will have the option to create sharing links that provide access to anyone, people within your organization, people with existing access, or specific people, including those in a private or group chat,”.

Synchronized metadata support. In the coming weeks, Microsoft will release an update to the OneDrive sync app that supports read-write sync for shared libraries that contain the required metadata. This will allow business users to edit content in their synced libraries while working from their desktops.

Move and keep sharing. Later this summer, business users will be able to choose to continue sharing with collaborators when they move their files between different shared locations. Users will receive a new link that maintains the same permissions they had before and will receive notification of the move, Microsoft says.

100 GB of file updates. With immediate effect, Microsoft has increased the upload file size limit from 15 GB to 100 GB on OneDrive and SharePoint for all.

Notices in comments. Later this year, Microsoft is adding the option to disable comment notifications for individual files. This will only affect that file, not the entire file library.

Shared address bar. Those who work on a file in a browser will soon be able to share links copied from their browser’s address bar with internal colleagues. These URLs will abide by all sharing policies, allowing for natural and easy collaboration within your organization, says Microsoft.

Synchronize administrator reports. These reports will allow administrators to check the adoption and status of the OneDrive sync app in their organizations.

Improved file protection and governance. Administrators will soon be able to implement automatic external access expiration, multi-factor authentication policies, such as requesting unique access codes (OTP), as well as extending continuous access assessments to OneDrive and SharePoint, Microsoft says.

Optimized administrator experience. Later this year, all of OneDrive’s management capabilities, including controls for sharing, accessing, syncing, and storing, will be available in the SharePoint admin center, consolidating administration tools in one place.

Sharing with family and group. Later this month, consumers using OneDrive on the web will be able to preset a group of people from their personal lives and then share files, photos, videos, and albums with that group.

Dark mode for the web. Following in the footsteps of OneDrive for Android and iOS, Microsoft will soon bring Dark Mode to OneDrive for the web through business and personal accounts.

Better collaboration with friends and family. OneDrive’s file details pane and activity feed now let you see your file and comment activity in one view, so you can quickly get back to whatever you, your friends and family are working on together, Microsoft says. .
