Like many of its browser peers, Microsoft Edge wants to make using the Internet less of a headache, at least when it comes to notifications.
Taking cues from a new Google Chrome feature to remove abusive pop-upsMicrosoft Edge is also working to make the Internet a little less frustrating. For many, this means getting rid of those irritating notification pop-ups that appear every time you go to a particular site. Sure, they’re not that bad from time to time, but they can definitely irritate your nerves over time.
As seen by TechRadar, the latest version of Microsoft’s browser, Edge 84, features the “Silent Notification Requests” feature, which is enabled by default. It won’t completely disable notifications, there are a few that we really want to see, but instead of being unpleasant and at first glance notifications will be relegated to a discreet bell icon that you can see in the address bar. You can click the buzzer when you’re ready to see pending notifications, or just ignore them. That is entirely up to you.
This effectively filters notifications instead of directly blocking them, like the Chrome feature, while offering less irritating alerts for users who don’t want to be bombarded with pop-ups. You can even turn on notifications for each particular site that offers them by clicking on the bell icon, which allows you to filter the pop-ups you receive.
If you prefer your pop-ups to full “volume”, so to speak, you can always disable the feature. Go to Notification Settings at edge: // settings / content / notifications and select Quiet Notification Requests. Make sure that option is disabled and you will receive your pop-ups as usual, if that’s something you prefer.
Microsoft also plans to make changes to its Toast notifications, or the ones that appear at the bottom of the screen in the Action Center in Windows 10, which may tend to accumulate if you don’t click on them. When Edge 85 debuts, this will change. In the future, these notifications will disappear in 25 seconds, so if you don’t particularly need to know anything about what your system is trying to tell you, these pop-ups will follow the dinosaur’s path.
Microsoft plans to offer more updates in the near future about this update and other changes it’s making, but for now it’s good to know that browser makers are thinking of ways to make browsing much less complicated. These changes are likely due to the fact that Microsoft has continually received multiple incidents of user feedback that there are simply too many notifications in nature when using Edge.
