- Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface Duo has an unlockable bootloader.
- This means you can customize, modify and customize flash ROMs.
There is some good news for those who buy the $ 1,400 Microsoft Surface Duo. In addition to the fact that the dual-screen Android device will receive OS updates for three years, Microsoft has also confirmed (h / t XDA Developers) that it will have an unlockable bootloader.
This means you can root the device, install custom ROMs, customize, play with hidden features, and more. However, Microsoft has not confirmed whether or not unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
We’ll also have to wait and see what the modding community comes up with for the Surface Duo. It is an expensive device to buy and you would not want to mess with rooting unless it is worth it. Unlocking the bootloader of a phone is a bit of a gamble. If done wrong, you could end up with a brick phone, if a device sticks to the bootloop.
However, it is good to see that Microsoft is giving this option to users. Smartphone manufacturers are increasingly tightening security on their devices, and finding phones that you can root or customize to your heart’s content is becoming less common by the day. So who is thinking of installing Windows 10 on the Surface Duo?
