Mick Jagger, Lorde, plus sign an open letter on the unauthorized use of music by politicians

Artist Rights Alliance (ARA) has shared an open letter signed by artists such as Mick Jagger, Lorde, Pearl Jam, Courtney Love, Elvis Costello, Lykke Li, Blondie, Jason Isbell, Sheryl Crow, Green Day and more on the unauthorized use of music of politicians. The artist-led non-profit organization requests that the political committees of the United States “establish clear policies that require campaigns to seek the consent of prominent recording artists, songwriters, and copyright owners before publicly using their music in a political or campaign setting. “

The note continues: “We have seen so many artists and properties dragged into politics against their will and forced to take aggressive measures to ban the use of their music, usually songs that are broadcast during political demonstrations. It can confuse and disappoint fans and even undermine artists’ long-term income, and above all, it’s not right. ”

The ARA addresses its request to six political campaign organizations: the Republican and Democratic National, Congress and Senate committees. “Many of these artists have spent their entire lives making music that we all know and love,” the statement said. “At the very least, it should be your choice whether or not to use it this way, especially in these hyperpartisan times.” Read the full note here.
