Michigan Wolverines fires DC Don Brown after 5 seasons, source says

Michigan has fired defensive coordinator Don Brown, a source confirming to ESPN.

The move was previously reported by Athletic.

Michigan finished the season 2-4, and the defense ranked 87th in the allowed yards per game, 59th in the allowed yards per game, and was at the bottom of the allowed running and passing yards per game.

Brown, 65, recently completed his fifth season at Michigan, and the defensive numbers continued to decline. In his first season as a defensive coordinator, in 2001, when he was hired from Boston College College Ledge, Brown’s defense was the number one yard allowed in a game and led the country in a yard allowed per game.

Wolverine caught opponents for less than 2,000 yards in three seasons from 2016 to 2018.

As these figures rose, so did the statistics of the last two seasons against rival Ohio State. Brown’s defense allowed 62 points and 567 yards in 2018 and 56 points and 577 yards in 2019.

Since Brown was released, there is no confirmation yet that Jim Harbog and Michigan have agreed to an extension of the contract, as Harboff is entering the final year of his current contract.
