Michigan added 477 confirmed cases of coronavirus to its cumulative total on Tuesday, August 18, which is less than the last daily average (701).
In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services reported 15 new deaths, seven of which were discovered through a vital records review process conducted three times a week.
In total, Michigan has reported 93,662 known cases of COVID-19 since March and 6,340 deaths associated with the novel coronavirus.
Health experts advise looking at seven-day moving averages to more accurately evaluate trends in new cases and deaths. The state averages 701 new cases and 11 new cases per day.
State-of-the-art hospital systems are treating a combined 639 people confirmed to be suspected of having COVID-19, as of Monday. The recent decision by the health department to add suspected cases to its hospital data makes it difficult to compare with previous data, which only included confirmed cases.
Of those 639 patients, 89 sat on ventilators and 176 sat in the ICU on Monday.
Thirty-four of Michigan’s 83 counties reported no new cases Tuesday.
Wayne County led the way with 102 new cases and five new deaths. Macomb County added 69 new cases, while Oakland added 57, Kent added 34, and both Saginaw and Monroe counties added 20. Livingston and Menominee counties each reported 12 new cases, followed by Genesee and Ottawa counties with 11 each.
Of the more than 22,000 diagnostic tests processed Monday statewide, 2.7% returned positive, which was the lowest daily positive test rate since June 30th.
Below are online databases that allow readers to retrieve county-level data for each of the last 20 days.
Often during the day it was reported to the state
First, a chart is shown with new cases that have been reported to the state every day for the past 20 days. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means that the patient first became ill days earlier.
You can call up a map for each province, and you can place your cursor over a bar to see the date and number of cases.
(In a few instances, a county reported a negative number (decline) in daily new cases, following a retroactive redistribution by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In those cases, we deducted cases from the previous date and 0 in ‘ the reported date.)
Fall on day of onset of symptoms
Below this chart shows new cases for the past 20 days based on the onset of symptoms. In this chart, figures for the last days are incomplete due to the delay time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed result of coronavirus, which can take up to a week or more.

COVID-19 FIXING TIPS:
In addition to washing your hands regularly and not recommending your face, officials advise exercising social distance, assuming everyone carries the virus.
Health officials say you should stay at least 6 feet away from others and work from home, if possible.
Use disinfectant wipes or disinfect spray cleaners on frequent touches of surfaces in your home (door handles, faucet, tire tops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go to places like shops.
Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan, has also issued executive orders requiring people to wear face masks over their mouths and nostrils in public indoor and outdoor areas. See an explanation of what that means here.
