Michael Wacha’s shoulder problem leaves another hole in the Mets’ rotation

While the Mets await the potential return of Marcus Stroman from the injured list in the near future, another starting pitcher is on the sidelines.

Michael Wacha was placed on the IL with inflammation of right shoulder before Sunday’s game against the Marlins, leaving the Mets with half of the starting pitchers they had in their spring training mix of the spring.

Since then, Noah Syndergaard (torn ulnar collateral ligament), Stroman (left calf) and Wacha have been injured.

Wacha allowed four runs over five innings in a loss to the Marlins on Friday. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA after arriving in the offseasons on a stimulating one-year contract. Wacha had a history of shoulder problems with the Cardinals.

“Due to [Friday’s] he felt something, but he could go on, “said manager Luis Rojas. “After the game, he talked to the staff and let them know and then we found out about it.”

Rojas ruled out the possibility that Stroman returned to take Wacha’s place in the rotation. Stroman is expected to show a simulated game on Tuesday to show that his calf has recovered and has the mobility to field his position.

The Mets might go to a Wacha venue on Wednesday with a bullpen game, according to Rojas. Other possibilities could include Franklyn Kilome and Walker Lockett.
