At least one Miami-Dade County police officer was relieved of his duties after a shocking video posted on Instagram showed two officers in a verbal altercation with a woman before one of them hit her in the face in a incident that allegedly took place at Miami International Airport
The video shows two police officers talking to the woman when she begins to confront one of them before meeting him face to face. It is unclear how the dispute started in the video.
The officer can then be seen stepping back and hitting the woman in the face, causing her to stumble back before they take her to the ground and appear handcuffed while on the ground.
The incident sparked a quick reaction from the Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, Alfredo Ramírez III, as well as the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Carlos Giménez, in statements published on Twitter.
“I am shocked and angry by a body camera video I just saw involving one of our officers,” Ramírez said in the social media statement. “I immediately launched an investigation and ordered that the officers involved be relieved of duty. Actions like these undermine the hard work we have invested in our community and break my heart for our community and for the vast majority of our officers who dedicate their lives to serving our County. This will not hold, and I assure our community that any officer acting in this vain will be held accountable. “
In addition, Ramirez confirmed that he spoke to state attorney Kathy Rundle and asked him to immediately become involved with the investigation into the officers’ conduct.
Mayor Giménez also released a statement on Twitter condemning the video saying the incident was unnecessary and a clear use of excessive force.
“This is terrible,” said Giménez. “It is an excessive use of force and unnecessary. That is NOT what our [Miami-Dade Police Department] they are trained to do. [Director] Ramírez ordered that the officer be relieved of duty and the investigation is ongoing. That is why I instituted body cameras and MDPD is reviewing all the images. “
The names of the two officers and the woman involved in the altercation have not yet been released and it is unknown if the two officers will face charges from the state attorney’s office.
Fort Laurderdale City Manager Chris Lagerbloom released a statement from him Thursday morning saying he was concerned, but what he saw on the video.
“I can understand the intensity of the moment captured in the body camera images since the officers were clearly under attack,” said Lagerbloom. “The exchange recorded by body cameras paints an unflattering but truthful depiction of the chaos they were operating in. The language used by the officers and the sentiment expressed is not consistent with what the public expects of our police force.”
Lagerbloom concluded: “We will learn from this experience and be better. This is what the public expects from the city of Fort Lauderdale. ”
