Miami linebacker commits Tyler Johnson He was named to the Dick Butkus High School Award Watch List on Monday.
The Butkus High School Award has been awarded annually since 2008. The Butkus Award was originally created in 1985. It was expanded to honor supporters at all three levels: high school, collegiate and professionally, a few years ago.
Johnson, who is ranked No. 22 outside linebacker for the country in this season, comes from a junior season in which he added 36 tackles, four sacks and one interception despite missing a few games in South Dade. The younger brother of former UM star and current Buffalo Bill safety Jaquan Johnson is expected to play his senior season at Miami Killian and was named to second-team defense MaxPreps Preseason All-Florida last week.
“It is a dominant force, there is no question about it.” South Dade head coach Nate Hudson told InsideTheU’s Chris Stock in January as he shared his thoughts on young Johnson. “There are many combinations we can do with him. Obviously the sky is the limit for him and we will continue to find ways to keep him motivated in every position he plays, without saying that he is bored, but you have to solve it and you have to think hard. We are extremely proud and look forward to it. “
Johnson is believed to be strong in his commitment to hurricanes, but in the past he has said that schools like Clemson and Georgia have expressed interest at different points during the recruitment process.
Other Sunshine State natives to do the Dick Butkus High School Award Watch List They include: Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas linebacker Jaydon Hood, Jacksonville Sandalwood linebacker Branden Jennings, Miami Northwestern linebacker Terrence Lewis and North Miami three-star athlete Chamon Metayer. Hood is committed to Michigan, Jennings is a long-standing FSU commitment, Lewis was verbally engaged to Tennessee months ago, while Metayer was committed to hurricanes.
