  • The 16th Motorized Cavalry of the Mexican Army received fire in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and killed 12 members of an attack squad linked to the Northeast Cartel
  • The incident took place at approximately 3 in the morning while the soldiers patrolled the Fresnos neighborhood and were attacked by the Infernal Troop gang.
  • The army said none of its soldiers died or were wounded in the shooting.

At least 12 cartel members were killed during a shooting with the Mexican military in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas near the Texas border on Friday.

Local media reported that a convoy of the 16th Motorized Cavalry of the Mexican Army was attacked with fire at approximately 3 am local time by members of the Troop of Hell [Inferno Troop], a squad tied to the Northeast Cartel [Northeast Cartel].

The shooting took place on a highway in the Nuevo Fresno neighborhood of Fresnos, a 10-mile drive from the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, which connects the United States and Mexico over the Rio Grande.

The leaked images on social media on Friday afternoon showed the bodies of the cartel members lying in the back of a van, where they allegedly launched their assault.

Several other minions of the Hell Troop were also photographed lying on the side of the road.

Army officers reported no casualties or injuries on their part after the war battle. At least three military vehicles were damaged in the attack.

Soldiers recovered 12 assault rifles, including two .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifles and eight AR-15 rifles.

The Northeast Cartel was founded in 2014 as a subdivision of the then powerful Los Zetas criminal organization and is led by Juan Gerardo ‘El Huevo’ Treviño Chávez.

The criminal organization has a presence in the northeastern states of Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and the north-central states of San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas.

Tamaulipa prosecutor’s offices are offering a $ 100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
