Jed Lowrie. The gift that keeps on taking.

At the time of its signing, Jed Lowrie’s two-year, $ 20 million contract represented a welcome change in the pace of the Mets. Rather than going into the season with an in-depth set of unanswered questions, Lowrie’s signature practically guaranteed New York would be in the picture.

However, a year after the deal, Lowrie’s deal has clearly been the worst signing of the Brodie Van Wagenen era. The last entry in Jed Lowrie’s story came today, as Steve Gelbs of SNY He reports that Lowrie has been placed in IL with left knee discomfort.

Lowrie’s knee discomfort is the latest of his many ailments since he signed with the Mets. In the 2019 spring training, Lowrie injured his left knee capsule. While in a minor league rehab phase, he suffered what Brodie Van Wagenen called “kinetic problems with his left side,” along with strain on his left hamstrings. While recovering from that injury, the infielder also suffered a strain on his right calf. Despite all the odds against him, he returned to the major league club in September, being hitless in seven at-bats.

In the original 2020 edition of Spring Training, Jed appeared at camp with a full brace on his left leg. Despite Van Wagenen’s permission, Lowrie did not appear in any spring training contests.

In Summer Camp 2.0, Lowrie declined to provide any explanation for his ailments, claiming that “he did not want to offer any distraction.” Despite being photographed heading the bases, he did not participate in any of the recent exhibition games against the Yankees.

Although Lowrie’s schedule is unclear, he will see a team doctor later this week. He is a free agent at the end of the season.

The Mets also placed RHP Walker lockett in 10-day IL with lower back discomfort.

Lockett, 26, struggled in his opening season in Queens, posting an ERA of 8.34, a FIP of 6.17 and a WHIP of 1,721 in nine games. Despite his troubles in 2019, he was expected to be the first man, should an injury occur to a member of the rotation.

Both players will not be ready for opening day.
