Mets, Marlins stage walkout protest after moment of silence

The Mets took the field on Thursday night and then left it.

After a day of questions about whether they would actually play, the Mets took the field with the Marlins, took off their hats for 42 seconds of silence, put a Black Lives Matter shirt home, and then immediately left the field.

With that, the Mets and Marlins made their sixth scheduled game Thursday, a day after the NBA, WNBA, MLS and several MLB teams chose not to play in solidarity after the 29-year-old police shooting black man Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc.

Met’s first baseman Dominic Smith knelt before Wednesday’s game and offered a tearful prospect of the team winning.

“The hardest part is seeing people still not care,” Smith said. “To make this happen continuously, it simply shows the hatred in people’s hearts. That just sucks, you know. Being a black man in America is not easy. Like I said, I was not there today (mentally), but I will find it good. ”
