Thursday night’s game between the Mets and Marlins has been postponed after two New York members tested positive for the coronavirus, MLB announced.
The Mets-Yankees Subway Series Friday night opening game has also been postponed. Competing rivals were judged to play a series of three games at Citi Field this weekend.
The league said the proposals were made “out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing.” It is still possible that the Subway Series will be played this weekend, depending on the results of the tracing of contacts.
According to News dayhis Tim Healy, one Mets player and one staff member tested positive for COVID-19. The team is no longer planning to leave for Miami on Wednesday night.
The Mets’ COVID-19 cases are the latest in a string of positive tests across MLB teams this season. Both the Marlins and the Cardinals missed several games in July and August following outbursts in their camps, while the Reds postponed two games last weekend after one player tested positive. Cincinnati was able to return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader.
Unlike the Reds, however, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets flew home. The Reds were told they had to isolate themselves at home for three days and could not come to park or see each other from the park.
The cases of coronavirus from New York on Thursday are not the first to be reported. Earlier in the day, Pirate President Travis Williams revealed he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was “on the road to recovery.” Williams said the team began the process of contact follow-up and the players, coaches and support staff of Bucs were not affected because the team was on its way.
