A bright burning Meteor Large areas of Japan were seen sinking from the sky, drawing attention on television and social media. On Sunday, the meteor, which was rapidly descending from the Earth’s atmosphere, caused a huge flash of lightning.
Many people in western Japan reported seeing rare sightings on social media. NHK Public Television said its cameras in central prefectures in Aichi, Mai and elsewhere received fireballs in the southern sky.
A camera at the port of Nagoya showed the meteor shining close to Earth, the Asahi newspaper reported.
Some experts said small pieces of the meteorite have reached the ground.
“We believe the last burst of light was as bright as a full moon,” Takshi Ino, director of the Akashi Municipal Planetarium, told the Kyodo News Agency.
The fireball appeared for only a few seconds in the early hours of Sunday, but was captured on NHK-owned cameras – which usually capture seismic activity rather than outside world light shows.
“The sky lit up for a moment and I felt weird because it couldn’t be lightning,” said a Twitter user who saw Fireb saw. “I felt the power of the universe!”
“Was it a fireball? I thought it was the end of the world …” said another, tweeting a video of a meteor caught while driving.
A bright shooting star was spotted over Tokyo in July and was later identified as a meteorite, fragments of which were found in neighboring Chiba prefecture.
