Metacritical blocking user reviews up to 36 hours after game launch

Bombs away?

Added review site Metacritic has implemented a new decision that prevents users from leaving review scores for a video game for up to 36 hours after the initial title release.

“We recently implemented the waiting period for all user reviews in our games section to ensure that our players have time to play these games before writing their reviews,” Metacritic told Viacom’s GameSpot. “This new waiting period for user reviews has been implemented in the Games section of Metacritic and was based on research based on data and with input from critics and industry experts.”

While the issue is not directly mentioned, it is impossible not to assume that the new ruling is an effort to combat the “revision blitz”. This is the process of drowning a particular title in a mass of negative review scores. A tactic often (but not always) employed by communities to protest against a particular aspect of a game beyond its actual game.

The most recent notable instance of revision blitz took place last month with the launch in The last of us Part II. Shortly hours Upon its release, the Naughty Dog sequel had already received over 5,000 negative user reviews, launching with a user score of 3/10, juxtaposed against a Metascore of 9/10. Previous bomb review campaigns were carried out against Pokemon Sword and Shield, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Captain marvel It should also be noted that despite these campaigns, all previous titles had incredible financial success.
