However, he is not some kind of branded troll trying to make a quick buck. In fact, he is the opposite.
Philip Martin McCauley, 61, told CNN that he has been a fan of the franchise since the 1980s, and that quarterback Joe Theisman is his favorite player in franchise history. He says his goal is simply to have the team change its name.
McCauley first registered the Washington Pigskins in 2015, and although he lost count, a search on the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office shows that he owns registered trademarks of names such as Washington Monuments, Washington Redtails, Washington. Veterans, Washington Red Wolves and Washington Warriors
Despite having trademarks for several potential team names, McCauley said he offered them in writing for free on July 4. However, he said he has not been contacted by the team or the NFL.
As for how much he has spent on all the trademarks, McCauley simply said, “It is less than what someone would pay to go to the home games for 6 years for tickets, parking and snacks.”
While McCauley told CNN that his best bet for the team’s new name is the Washington Pandas, the team is highly unlikely to consider it. McCauley can at least take comfort in knowing the team has vowed to change its name, and hopes it won’t be an obstacle that gets in the way.
