Although there were rumors for years of a feud between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, royal insiders and sources have long insisted that there was no truth to the claims.

In the new royal biography Finding Freedom: Harry, Meghan and Creating a Modern Royal Family, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand confirm that Meghan and Kate have always been “heartfelt” with each other, but that they were not best friends and things were sometimes difficult.

In an interview for the Channel 5 documentary Meghan & Harry: The New Revelations, royal expert Katie Nicholl said the awkwardness may stem from Meghan having “unrealistic expectations” of her friendship with Kate.
The relationship between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton was under a microscope from the moment the women met each other – if not earlier, honestly. While there were rumors that the royal sisters-in-law were not getting along, talks of a heated shift between the two became too much, according to the new royal biography Finding freedom: Harry, Meghan and creating a modern royal family.
In the book, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write that, “Kate felt they had little in common – other than the fact that they lived in Kensington Palace” and “Meghan would agree with the assessment that the Duchesses were not the best of friends. Her relationship hadn’t progressed much since she was Harry’s girlfriend. “
However, the authors claim that Kate and Meghan were never “at war” and that they were always close to each other, but that things were sometimes a little awkward.
In an interview for the Channel 5 documentary Meghan & Harry: The New Revelations, royal expert Katie Nicholl offered a possible explanation for the inconvenience.
“While there might have been an expectation from Meghan that Kate went to sit down and show her the ropes, maybe that was an unrealistic expectation,” Nicholl said. “The Duchess of Cambridge is a busy woman, but Meghan has taken that clearly personally.”
Nicholl was not the only expert to discuss Kate and Meghan’s strained relationship with the doc. Royal expert Russell Myers added, “They were very different women from very different backgrounds who will already have very different roles within the institution. The photos of her laughing and joking together at Wimbledon were probably the best it would ever get. “
