The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said it was “absurd” to be fined for employing too many women in senior positions in the city.
Hidalgo’s remarks came after a request for a fine of 90,000 euros (,000 110,000) from the French Ministry of Public Services, which said more female employees had broken the rules in 2018 than men at City Hall in Paris.
According to Yahoo News, Hidalgo said during a city council meeting that he was “delighted” to have been fined.
Hidalgo’s fine came as a result of 11 women in 2018 and a staff of only five men in management positions, Yahoo News reported.
Hidalgo said with a laugh, “The management of City Hall has, suddenly, become very feminist.” He added that the fine brought her joy.
According to the BBC, the rule, which was drafted in 2013, states that no more than 60 per cent of new appointments to management positions in the public service should go to a single caste.
“These penalties are obviously absurd, unreasonable, irresponsible and dangerous,” Hidalgo said.
France’s public service minister, Emily de Monthlin, wrote on Twitter that the “absurd” provision was repealed in 2019.

“I declare that the fine paid by Paris for 2018 to pay for concrete measures to promote women in the public service. I invite you to join the ministry!” She said.
