Massachusetts reports 19 new coronavirus deaths, 273 cases of COVID-19 on Sunday


Massachusetts health officials announced that 19 more people have died from coronavirus, bringing the statewide death count to 8,310 since the pandemic began.

State Department of Public Health officials also confirmed an additional 273 cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the community to at least 108,380. That is based on 1,440,717 total molecular tests reported as of Sunday.

There were also 96 new probable cases of the virus, increasing the number of probable cases to 7,257, authorities said. There are 219 probable deaths.

As of Sunday, 364 people are hospitalized due to coronaviruses, including 56 in intensive care units.

The latest data comes as Massachusetts officials are still concerned about the new outbreaks locally, as several states in the south and west have seen new cases skyrocket during phased reopens.

Cape Cod authorities said they have seen an increase in cases over the past week. A party in Chatham that took place on July 12 is linked to at least 10 cases.

A pop-up coronavirus test site will be opened Monday in Chatham for people who attended the July 12 party linked to the COVID-19 case group in Cape Cod. The city, in coordination with the Department of Health and Environment of Barnstable County and Cape Cod Healthcare will host the pop-up site in the attached City Office parking lot Monday from 10 am to 2 pm

Beginning August 1, all travelers, including students returning to school, must be quarantined for two weeks and complete a “Massachusetts Travel Form” or risk a $ 500 fine each day they do not comply. . To avoid quarantine, travelers must show a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours before arriving in the state.

Sunday’s data follows Governor Charlie Baker’s order requiring visitors from some states to be quarantined for 14 days or face a fine. Visitors from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Hawaii are exempt.
