State health officials announced 14 other coronavirus deaths Friday, bringing the statewide death count to 8,582.
Officials also confirmed another 212 cases of COVID-19, for a total of 113,729 cases across the entire community. That is based on 21,552 new molecular tests reported on Friday, according to the Department of Public Health.
There are currently 398 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 58 patients in intensive care.
The state has followed six key metrics in the fight to contain COVID-19: the positive test rate, the number of individuals who died from the virus, the number of patients hospitalized, the health care system’s readiness, test capacity and contact tracing possibilities.
The test frequency, the number of patients who are hospitalized with the virus and the test capacity of the state have all been positively trending – in the ‘green’, according to their color-coded system. Health officials noted this week that they have completed contact tracking for 92% of cases of coronavirus, identified by local health departments, and moved another key metric into the green.
As of Friday, there are at least 5,228,817 cases of COVID-19 in the United States, and 166,317 total deaths, up 1,169 from the day before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although Massachusetts has seen an increase in cases in recent weeks, it appears that new infections are beginning to level off. Massachusetts is now considered one of nearly two dozen states where infection levels have remained the same in recent days, according to the New York Times.
The latest numbers come after Gov. Charlie Baker earlier this week began releasing “enhanced” city-level data to see specific case counts in each state in the state. The new limits for large-scale outdoor gatherings also took effect Tuesday. All outdoor meetings will be limited to 50 people, instead of 100. The limit on indoor meetings will remain at 25 people.
