Massachusetts officials are reviewing the state’s guidance on the size of public gatherings in light of recent parties and groups that are linked to groups of COVID-19 infections in parts of the state, Governor Charlie Baker said.
Baker, speaking at a press conference in Andover, said state officials are talking about the limits of public meetings. The Governor’s Executive Order limits indoor meetings to 25 people in an indoor space and 100 people in closed outdoor areas.
The Republican governor also said the problems come down to human behavior rather than the size of public meetings.
“The biggest problem is not so much the nature of the size of some of these meetings, especially the private ones that take place in backyards and places like that,” he said. “The most important problem, frankly, is overall behavior in those who are not socially distant, unmasked, and in some respects, a lack of respect for how this virus works.”
“I know I sound like an old man, an old man talking to my children when I say this,” he added, “but much of this is about the decisions and behaviors of all of us as individuals.”
Parts of the entire country, including some on Cape Cod, have come under scrutiny as tinderboxes for COVID-19 broadcasts at a time when officials urge the public to continue wearing masks and social distancing.
In Chatham, authorities say a home party on July 12 is linked to 13 COVID-19 cases, the Cape Cod Times reported. Barnstable County reported 20 new cases of coronavirus earlier this week. Eight Falmouth first responders tested positive for the virus last week, reportedly after attending a party with other beach department staff members.
Large gatherings outside the Cape have also attracted attention. A widely released photo of a cruise ship packed with passengers in Boston Harbor led to a cease and desist order against the Bay State Cruise Company earlier this week. The company said it was compliant with collection restrictions, arguing that the center deck is a semi-enclosed space that can hold up to 100 people and the top deck is an outdoor area that should have no capacity restrictions.
An executive order quarantining certain travelers from other states entering Massachusetts takes effect on Saturday. Visitors from other states, except eight, will have to be quarantined for 14 days or take a COVID-19 test within the first 72 hours, or face a fine of $ 500 per day. The order also applies to Massachusetts residents returning from the state with some exceptions.
