Mary Trump followed up her cordial interview Wednesday night with Stephen Colbert with an appearance Thursday morning on The View. Thanks to Meghan McCain, this one had much sharper edges.
President Donald Trump’s niece spent the first few minutes of the interview answering questions about the revelations in her best-selling new book. Too much and never enough. But when it was McCain’s turn to speak, she was very quick to do the interview on herself.
“Look, I think I made it clear to your editors, I don’t like books like this,” McCain told him. “I don’t like family books, especially when it comes to families with fame and power. They are told on the one hand, and the subjects are often villains to the point that I don’t actually end up believing what is written. Books have been written about my family, which are complete and total garbage, told from a biased perspective. “
“At the end of the day, you get a great salary, but I don’t think it’s that legitimate,” he continued. “What do you say to people like me that you think this is a great way to get a paycheck right now?”
“Well, you have every right to your opinion,” replied Mary Trump. But for anyone who has “read the book,” the author said, she hoped she “will see that I bring to history my very deep experience within the family,” adding: “I am not a stranger writing it.” I am her niece.
McCain took advantage of the fact that Mary Trump has said she doesn’t have a close relationship with her much younger cousins, Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka. “I know that in my family, and my family clearly doesn’t look anything like the Trumps,” but close people are close, “he said.” I certainly have an extended family that I don’t interact with, or certainly only interact with at funerals. and things like that. So I don’t think people like that know the inner workings of my immediate family dynamics in the way you present it. ”
Mary Trump not only rejected the idea that she is an “extended family,” but directly addressed McCain’s allegations of her “salary.”
“If I had wanted a little revenge, if I had wanted to profit as you say,” he explained, “I would have done it 10 years ago when Donald was still a very public figure and would not have been taking the Risk I am taking. We have all seen how whistleblowers are doing in this administration. So I would have preferred not to do this, but I felt it was extremely important that the American people have all the information they need to make an informed decision. ”
Clearly dissatisfied with that response, McCain replied, “But he was not concerned enough not to go to the White House and dine with him,” adding that he was “in the taxpayer’s currency” before returning once more to his lack of relationship with the adult children of the President.
“I’m not entirely sure where you are so focused on my cousins, who are much younger than me again,” replied Mary Trump. He called McCain’s accusation that he went to the White House for taxpayer money “something quite absurd,” explaining that he visited early in Trump’s term to celebrate his aunt’s birthday and “not take advantage of Donald’s position.” .
“I think focusing on these things is taking away the really important things that I write about in the book,” he said.
Mary Trump remained on the show for two more segments, but Meghan McCain seemed to have disappeared from The view. After the President’s niece left, McCain returned, but had nothing more to say about her book.
