Jon Gruden’s comments about Mariota’s “brilliant” play possibilities on Friday were good to hear, but of course the stories that followed were predictable.
Remarkably, Mike Florio, of ProFootballTalk, who likes to deal with all sorts of rumors with Carr, could not resist. Florio said Mariota’s game should raise ‘eyebrows’ and’ get ‘attention’ from Carr, while he easily denied the fact that Carr has an excellent camp by all accounts.
But like most of Florio’s legacies from Carr, this one is not outdated either.
According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic on Monday, it’s already time for Florio to pull the trigger on Mariota who won the starting lineup in Las Vegas (no, he did not mention Florio specifically, but he should have).
“Mariota looks a bit stiff throwing the ball out. Gruden mentioned how he came back from an elbow injury, but Mariota does not look so comfortable and does not help the ball look so smooth, ‘Tafur told The Athletic on Monday. “He had some nice runs that made Gruden up, but the short throws are not nice, while the longer throws are hit and miss. Someone who saw Mariota with the Titans told me he was never a great practice player in Nashville, but still. ”
Florio rather Delay not credit on information he wol to place so that there is almost no chance that he will run with a Tafur report that he does not wants to post. Maybe he will pass this one on to his diverse group subordinates by ProFootballTalk.
As for Mariota, it will take time for him to learn Gruden’s system. The hope would be that he will be physically and mentally close to being ready when (or when) the Raiders need to call him at some point in the season.
But Carr defeated in training camp?
That was always a ridiculous narrative.
