Many older Macs will not be able to watch 4K Netflix this fall due to a missing chip

OS Pal’s next release of its Mac operating operating system, OS Kos Big Sur, will eventually let you watch 4K HDR Netflix content, but it turns out that it will only work with Max Apple Pal’s T2 security chip for 2018 or later, according to the new Netflix support document. Apple Terminal).

That means the full list of MX that can watch 4K content on Netflix, at least for now, is as follows:

  • IMac (2020)
  • IMac Pro
  • Mac Pro (2019)
  • Mac Mini (2018)
  • M B Kabuk Air (2018 or later)
  • MB Kabuk Pro (2018 or later)

As the Mac Pal points out on its website, there’s an easy way to check if your Mac has a T2 chip.

Disappointingly, older iMacs and pre-2018 Mac laptops, which could theoretically play Netflix 4K content on their built-in displays or via 4K or 5K external monitors, will not be able to. It’s not clear why the T2 security chip is needed: Netflix didn’t have an immediate response for us, and Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.

But if we had to guess, the T2 chip would be able to handle 4K content better because it acts as a co-processor. According to the marketing slide of the 2 October October 2018 event, the T2 chip has built-in video processing power, including the popular HVVC. Includes support for codecs. On its website for the latest iMac, Apple Paul says the T2 chip “makes transcoding HVVC video twice as fast as the previous pay generation.”

We’re not sure Netflix uses HEVC for these high reservation streams, but if it does, maybe the T2 chip will help 4K Netflix play smoothly on the Mac.

And you can only view 4K Netflix content using Safari, not other browsers, according to Netflix’s support docket.

With the special requirements for viewing 4K Netflix, Mac users are not the only ones, however: on Windows, you need to be on Windows 10, using a Micro Edge Edge or Netflix application, with a 4K-enabled display and a CPU or GPU with a machine powerful enough .
