The current controversy surrounding the US Postal Service (USPS) shows why the postmaster general should be confirmed by Congress as an official of the Cabinet, sen. Joe Manchin, DW.Va., commented Wednesday on “Bill Hemmer Reports.”
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has come under height control in recent weeks after announcing operational changes to the USPS earlier this month. On Tuesday, DeJoy said all changes would be kept until after the election at the call of Democrats and Liberals who claimed the changes would negatively affect Americans’ ability to vote by mail in November.

Currently, the postmaster general is elected by the USPS Board of Governors, whose members are appointed by the President and confirmed by the House of Representatives. The USPS has been an independent executive agency since 1971.
“The thing I said is, it’s terribly funny that basically this is all done in a period of time that Mr. DeJoy just came in,” Manchin host Bill Hemmer said.

In a statement Tuesday, Manchin said DeJoy’s decision to stick to changes until after November is “a step in the right direction, but actions speak louder than words.
“The postal service must immediately resubmit all critical machinery and equipment that have been in operation or removed from service since Mr. DeJoy’s office began and extend this moratorium on major changes by the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. includes no closure of post offices, no reduction of hours, and the ongoing treatment of election mail as first-class mail, ”he added.

“We all know that if the American people and members of Congress were not pushed back on these unacceptable changes, the administration would continue as they have been. I am not fighting to make sure that every American and West -Virginian receiving her medication, her social security benefits, and yes, her election ballots. “
“The Post Office is basically the only thing we have as a lifeline for so many people, especially in rural America, all in rural West Virginia,” Manchin explained to Hemmer. “It’s a lifeline. It’s where your medicine comes from. It’s where your controls come from. It’s where your communication comes from. Everyone has no broadband, fast interconnectivity. So, it’s basically our lifeline. “
