Olivier Giroud’s goals, Mason Mount and a Harry Maguire own goal gave Frank Lampard a shot at his first trophy since taking over Stamford Bridge earlier this season. Bruno Fernandes scored a late goal for United from the point.
The game was halted for several minutes at the end of the first half when United defender Eric Bailly was served and finally stretched after a violent head-butt with fellow defender Maguire, but began to function soon after.
Chelsea took the lead minutes after play resumed through Giroud, whose redirection from the side of a cross by César Azpilicueta spurted past De Gea and dribbled down the line.
It was two goals ahead just after the restart, again with the help of De Gea, when Mason Mount’s long-range low effort was hit hard, but the United keeper should have easily dealt with it, and instead introduced the ball into the net with a weak push.
A 74th minute own goal by Maguire completed the score for the Blues and reserved his ticket for the final: the former Leicester man hit a dangerous center from the left and inadvertently hit De Gea from close range.
Fernandes scored a penalty kick for United in the 85th minute.
