Man who murdered Michael Jordan’s father in 1993, approved for parole


One of the two men who murdered basketball player Michael Jordan’s father nearly 30 years ago was granted leave on Tuesday.

Larry Demery – who was sentenced in 1996 to life in prison for the murder of James Jordan – will be a free man on August 6, 2023, the Commission of Supervision and Parole of North Carolina announced on Twitter.

The murder was devastating to the NBA legend, who was extremely close to his father. He retired shortly thereafter, although he said he had already made the decision before the tragedy.

Both Demery and Green were convicted of first-degree murder – but accused each other of being the trigger.

As part of a plea deal, Demery testified against Green at trial, saying he was the shooter. Green, who was also sentenced to life in prison, claimed that Demery asked him to help remove Jordan’s body, but that he was not there during the murder.

The current state conviction laws eliminate parole for crimes committed on or after October 1, 1994. However, offenders convicted under the previous directives are still eligible.

Demery’s release is conditional on him remaining in prison as a prisoner. Green will not be eligible for parole until October 2021, according to local outlet WRAL.
