A man remained barricaded early Monday morning in a Texas home with a hostage more than 12 hours after three police officers were shot after they responded to the home, outside Austin.
Several law enforcement agencies were at the scene at Natalie Cove in Cedar Park, police said. “This remains a very active scene, the subject is not currently in custody,” a Cedar Park Police Department tweet said.
Police were called to the home at about 3:10 p.m. local time Sunday and were hit with gunfire, according to police. Three officers were shot in stable condition and taken to a local hospital.
Officers had returned fire but were not sure if the man was injured, Cedar Park Police Chief Mark Harmon said Sunday night, according to NBC branch KXAN.
The man was initially barricaded with his mother, a youth and another person, all believing family, Harmon said.
Two of the hostages were released Monday morning, police said Monday at 8 a.m. local time, without indicating which one.
He is thought to be in his 20s and has a history of mental health issues. Police said they had previously responded to the stay but did not provide any specifications. Sunday, the man’s husband reported that he kicked in the door and acted aggressively.
“If you are listening, please come over and give yourself free so that we can resolve this situation of today,” Harmon had pleaded with the man.
At 4:30 a.m. Monday, police told residents who lived on Natalie Cove, in the subdivision of Heritage Park, to stay inside their homes until they were told it was safe to leave. A tweet from the city asked people to avoid the area.
Texas Attorney Greg Abbott said in a statement that “our hearts go out to the police officers who were injured while protecting the Cedar Park community this afternoon.”
“We must never accept the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers as applicable, and the state of Texas is ready to provide the support and resources necessary to bring justice to those involved,” the statement said. the governor.
