A man who was walking three dogs on a trail in Simsbury was attacked by a black bear on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. at the McLean Games Shelter on Firetown Road, police said.
Police said the attack occurred about 20 minutes on the Eddy Loop Trail.
The man was walking three dogs on the way when a bear came out and bit one of the dogs, according to Sgt. Brad Chase. The man tried to intervene and help the dog when he himself was bitten on the leg.
The man sought medical attention and is well, police said.
The police department said they are working with the Energy and Environmental Protection Department, which is handling the bear aspect of the incident.
One of the three dogs escaped when the incident occurred and she is still missing. Lucy, a golden retriever weighing around 50 pounds, was last seen with a 6-foot pink leash attached to her necklace, police said.
People, from the police to community members, ran to the trail near the Granby city line.
“They are out. They have offered to help. They have come to watch. They’ve driven, “said Ileana Ghamo of West Hartford.
“The first thing people should do when their dog goes missing is put up signs,” said Karen Moulton of Avon.
Moulton with Farmington Valley Pet Recovery did exactly that. She encourages people not to chase stray dogs and the police urge people who see Lucy to call the authorities.
“We only hope for the best. I think she will appear. Just a question of how long, “said Moulton.
Anyone with information about the incident should call the police at 860-658-3100.
Police remind anyone camping, walking, or walking their dog to check ct.gov and search for the black bear for safety precautions.
