Malaysia coroner denies death of French-Irish teenager

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – A Malaysian governor ruled on Monday that the body of a French-Irish teenager was found near a Malaysian jungle resort where she went missing on vacation, possibly due to malpractice that did not involve others.

Coroner Memunah Ade denied cow slaughter, natural death and suicide, saying Nora Anne Kuorin was probably lost after leaving her family’s hut.

One day after the family arrived on vacation, 15-year-old Gust disappeared in 2019 at the Dusun Eco Resort in the southern Negeri Sembilan state. After a thorough search, his naked body was found on August 13 next to a stream on the Palm Oil Estate, 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) from the resort.

Police believe she climbed out of the cottage window by herself, with no evidence of a false game. But the teen’s parents said she was more likely to be abducted because she had a mental and physical disability and would not have wandered off on her own. They said in the interrogation that a third party could throw his body in the area after his search operation.

Without any evidence, Coroner described the family’s suggestions as “probably nothing more than theory.”

Nora Annie was wearing only underwear when she went missing, but her body was found naked. Coroner noted the family’s argument that this was attributed to the possibility of a sexual assault, but said that no such evidence had been found in the extensive autopsy, nor would there be evidence of conflict or grief.

Maimuna also said there were no suspicious circumstances before the teenager went missing, no ransom request and no signs of intrusion into the family hut.

“I ruled that Nora was not involved in Annie’s death. It is possible that she died in an accident, meaning that she got out (of the cottage) by herself and then got lost in the abundant palm oil plantations. “

Nora Annie’s parents were hearing the verdict online from their home in London, but made no immediate statement.

A British pathologist who performed another autopsy on Nora Annie’s body in the United Kingdom testified that she agreed with Malaysia’s findings that she had died of intestinal bleeding due to starvation and stress. However, he said he could not completely rule out a sexual assault because of the severe decay of the body.

Maimuna said Nora Anne, who slept in the loft with her siblings, would have been shouting or yelling at the party in another nearby cottage and could have gone downstairs to find her parents.

But the coroner said the teenager would not have been able to open the heavy sliding door in her parents’ bedroom and would have walked out of the cottage. Her mother testified that a hut window, with a broken latch, was found, which was found in the morning, Nora Anne had disappeared, but the coroner said she could have accidentally left it open.

Rescuers may have ignored Nora’s body because of the thick jungle territory, Maimuna added. An autopsy estimated that she died between two and four days before her body was discovered.

A total of 49 witnesses have testified ૨ 24 days since August through video conferencing due to the coronavirus epidemic.
