As cases rise nationally, another COVID-19 vaccine candidate, Moderna, said he would apply Monday for Food and Drug Administration approval for emergency use of the vaccine, according to news reports. Pfizer was launched in early November and will appear before a panel of FDA scientists on December 10, while Moderna is expected to appear before the same panel on December 17, a week later.

If both are approved, the distribution of the Pfizer vaccine could begin around December 15, with Moderna starting December 21, company officials said.

Modern’s chief medical officer, Dr. “This was the first time I allowed myself to cry,” Tal Zacks told CNN on Monday. “We fully expect a change in the course of this epidemic.”

Both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have an efficacy rate of about 95 percent, according to late-stage clinical trials.

Full rollouts of the vaccine are expected in 2021, with public health officials urging the country’s hospitals to keep pace with the deteriorating epidemic. Maine is performing relatively well compared to most other states, but only because epidemics are declining in Maine compared to most states. Hawaii had the lowest virus spread in the country at 6.9.

Twenty-five states had at least double Maine virus prevalence rates, and Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota had rates 10 times higher than Maine or higher.

As the situation worsens, more people seek care in hospitals.
