The Kansas City Royals acquired a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, but when the Tigers quickly denied it by moving away to a 5-1 lead in the portion Bottom of the box, Royals fans and a single bowl of petunias collectively said “Oh no, not again.” Fortunately, the Royals’ bats came to life to overcome the poor start to the pitch and achieve a 12-6 victory over the Tigers.
Royals starter Mike Montgomery for this game started the game well enough. He passed the first inning without any damage rendered. And to start the inning, Montgomery was unlucky. After delivering a single to Jordy Mercer, a dirt ball through the teeth of the defense, Cameron Maybin placed a second single at an exit speed of 71 MPH. Then Adalberto Mondesi made a mistake at shortstop on another low off Víctor Reyes’ bat.
Afterward, however, Montgomery ceased to be unfortunate and began to be simply bad. JaCoby Jones and Niko Goodrum crushed a home run and tripled to 109 MPH and 104 MPH from the start, respectively, and after a bag fly it was 5-1 Tigers.
The Royals chased Tigers starter Michael Fulmer in the third inning after resounding home runs by Whit Merrifield and Salvador Pérez. That closed the score at 5-4, Detroit. At the end of the third, Mike Matheny continued his fast-hook story by pulling Montgomery and replacing him with Foster Griffin for his major league debut, on his 25th birthday, no less. Griffin was 1 two⁄3 scoreless innings, scoring his first strikeout of his career and looking noticeably sharper than Montgomery. Unfortunately, Griffin left in the fourth inning with a strain on his left forearm.
The Royals roared ahead in the sixth inning with a flurry of loud punches. It started with a Franchy Cordero double and a Merrifield double, encased around a walked Brett Phillips. For a moment, it looked like Kyle Funkhouser would walk away without any further damage, but with two outs Salvador Perez walked (yes, walked) Ryan O’Hearn then pushed a fastball through the turn for a single. Detroit then replaced Funkhouser with Beau Burrows.
It was no use. Franco hit his second home run of the night, a three-run shot to the left, finishing a fourth inning of six runs. It was one of six home runs for the Royals, which he tied with a team home run record. Jorge Soler and Phillips hit two-run shots in the fifth and ninth innings, respectfully. Do you want to see them all? OK! Are here.

A quartet of Royals relievers – Kevin McCarthy, Josh Staumont, Glenn Sparkman and Gabe Speier – gave up a run in 5.1 innings after Griffin’s injury. Final score: 14-6.
The Royals are 2-2. As I said in the game thread, the Miami Marlins coronavirus outbreak could be doomed this season before it takes off properly. The Royals are slated to face the Tigers for the second game of four tomorrow, if it is not canceled or postponed along with the rest of the MLB season. So for tonight, enjoy the package of six juicy dongs and delight in the Royals’ victory. It is all we can do.
