Tension between the main actors forced the “Fury Road” stunt team to split up.
Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy first spoke in detail about their feud on the set of “Mad Max: Fury Road” in May, and now stunt actress Dayna Grant is opening up to Metro about the “intense” and “challenging” atmosphere. “which was created on set by the clash between the two main actors. Grant was Theron’s double for Furiosa. The specialist said the Theron-Hardy dispute was evident from the early stages of production and forced a separation in the way the action scenes were choreographed in pre-production and filmed during production.
“We knew that from the beginning,” said Grant. “We knew from the beginning what was happening when we were doing the fight choreography … there was tension then. Then they told us what was happening. And we were only told to try to make it work as much as possible, which was a challenge, because usually they are all in a big group and working together while we were apart. ”
“It was very difficult. It was difficult because obviously I had to spend time with both of them and they both didn’t want to be together, ”Grant continued. “I had to do everything with [Tom] Usually Charlize would come in and do scenes together, but they didn’t want to do scenes together, so they put me in her place to always be with Tom. Tom’s double always got on Charlize, so we actually worked with opposite characters. “
Instead of working together as a team, the fight forced Theron and Hardy’s doubles to separate. Theron took some responsibility for the feud during an interview with The New York Times published in May, saying: “I didn’t have enough empathy to really understand, really, how it felt to step on Mel Gibson’s shoes. That is scary! And I think because of my own fear, we were putting up walls to protect ourselves rather than saying to each other, ‘This is scary for you and also for me. Let’s be kind to each other. In a strange way, we were functioning as our characters: it was all about survival. “
“I think in hindsight it was in my head in so many ways,” Hardy told The Times. “The pressure on the two of them was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced, companion in me. That is something that cannot be falsified. I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could live up to that occasion. “
Theron and Hardy seem to have made amends, which is good news for “Mad Max” fans, as “Fury Road” remains for many moviegoers one of the best action movies ever made. Miller is currently developing a spin-off of “Fury Road” focused on the Furiosa character, but Theron will not be returning to the role as the project is a prequel.
