Infielder brewers Luis Urias and left-handed Angel Perdomo both tested positive for COVID-19 before intake, manager Craig Counsell told reporters this morning (Twitter links via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). Both gave their consent for their diagnoses to be made public. Urias and Perdomo are thankfully asymptomatic at the moment and are going through the league’s COVID-19 protocols. They will need a couple of negative tests, separated by at least 24 hours, before they can join the Brewers Summer Camp.
There is no firm schedule for Urias or Perdomo to return to the team, although Counsell estimated that it would take at least 10 days. That is of particular importance to Urias, who was struggling for an initial inside box job and already had his initial spring training removed by a fractured hamate bone that required surgical repair.
The overall well-being of Urias, 23, and Perdomo, 26, is certainly the biggest focus, but now they may only have a week or so to add to the season. The potential impact it would have on Urias’s role, at least initially, is clear. Former top prospect is likely Orlando Arcia He would shoulder most of the workload at shortstop if Urias was unavailable or outside the gate. As for Perdomo, he wasn’t in the club’s starting squad, but he appears to be seen as a left-hander who could make his MLB debut in 2020, assuming a full recovery.
